Sherman LaurenceSHERMAN, Laurence Cornish 'Papasherm' - Born in Spokane, WA (1933) to loving parents Ruth and Laurence Sr.

Larry had only fond memories of his childhood and its adventures.

In the 1950s, he studied architecture and fell in love with jazz, while getting his wings as a U.S. Air Force Pilot in the ROTC.

Being stationed in Fukuoka, Japan at the end of his training opened his eyes to different styles of design and different perspectives of humanity.

Upon his return, he flew F-100s with the Air National Guard in Denver before beginning his MA in Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Pennsylvania.

In 1967 Larry and his wife Ursula moved to Montreal, where he eventually co-founded IBI Group, now a world-wide interdisciplinary design and planning firm.

Larry was gregarious, witty, wise and thoughtful. His interest in others was genuine, and his forthrightness was daunting. “Rules are made for people who can’t think for themselves.” “Just show up.” “Life should be fun.”

Known throughout the Annex as “Petra’s Dad” and in the international theatre community as Jessica’s “Papasherm”, Larry is survived by his two daughters, to whom he was devoted, and for whom he is the very sun.

Instead of mourning his passing, a celebration of Larry’s life will be organized for his birthday in late May.
