Bartholomew HelgaBARTHOLOMEW, Helga (nee Backman) - (May 22, 1931 - June 3, 2021)

Helga passed away at the age of 90 on June 3, 2021 at Chartwell Long Term Care in Aurora, Ontario.

She was predeceased by her husband Ronald Wilkes Bartholomew of 52 years and her siblings Kristveig Lillian Harris and Kristjan Allan Backman.

She was a loving mother to Carol Anne Sturup (Svend) and Nancy Jane Lehmkuhl and a very proud Amma to Daniel (Laura), Michael (Alice) and Signe (Jochen) and Langamma to Jackson, Madeline, Clara, Anna and Elliot. She will also be remembered by her family of nieces and nephews in Winnipeg and Lundar, Manitoba.

Helga was born on the family farm in Oak Point, Manitoba. She was so proud of her Icelandic Heritage and had flags around the house and at the cottage. She finished high school in Clarkleigh and went on to secretarial school in Winnipeg. While working in Winnipeg, she met Ronald and they were married on May 9, 1953. They lived for a brief time in Cleveland, Ohio and Brandon, Manitoba and returned to Winnipeg before Ron’s job took them to North Bay, Ontario and finally Thornhill, Ontario.

Helga thrived as a mother and wife sewing everyone’s clothes, baking up a storm, heading up the PTA, playing bridge, gardening and much more. She was famous for her chocolate chip cookies!

Helga went back to work, when Nancy entered high school, becoming a Medical Secretary. She continued this career until she retired at 55.

Throughout her life Helga suffered many health problems that she struggled with to the end. She was a true Viking. She was dearly loved and will be missed.

A private ceremony will be held with the family at Thompson Funeral Home in Aurora.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario Division, 180 Dundas St W, Suite 2301, Toronto, ON M5G 1Z8.
