Marcello GeorgeMARCELLO, George - George Marcello was born on July 28, 1955 in Toronto, Ontario and passed away on June 7, 2021 in Toronto, Ontario at the age of 65 years.

George was predeceased by his beloved parents Agostino and Rosa Maria Marcello.

He is the loving brother of Caterina, Domenico and Salvatore (Mary). Cherished Zio of many nephews and nieces: Daniele, Letizia, Michael, Alessia and Alexandra. Also cherished by his great niece and nephews Adlaida, Naeus and Armani. George will also be remembered by Khaled and Mohammed who he always referred to as his kids.

George will be loved, deeply missed and forever remembered by all of his family and friends.

George was the founder and CEO of Step by Step Organ Donation Association.

He began his journey immediately after receiving his first liver transplant. After a transplant, most people would rest, heal and go back to their normal lives but George didn’t stop there. He wanted to personally thank the family who donated that liver by walking from Toronto To Parliament Hill in Ottawa to say Thank You! and to show people of Canada that organ donations saves lives.

That inspired him to start up Step by Step back in 1996.

George was a Canadian activist who became a national hero and an inspirational figure for his fight on the importance of organ donations across Canada. For over 25 years, through his many steps and 8 campaigns he conducted here and around the world, his mission was to raise awareness of the shortage of organs in Canada.

George would have told you his most memorable moment throughout all these years was when Mayor Mel Lastman put baby powder on George’s feet before he embarked on yet another one of his campaigns.

That was big but what was even bigger was the day he met Pope John Paul II in Vatican City in Rome back on Sept 5, 2011. The message from Pope John Paul was to keep this Torch of Life legacy going and reach out the children around the world.

George followed the Pope’s recommendation and carried that message around the world with several more campaigns to follow.

“I have never met anyone who gave more of himself to organ donation as much as George did,” said Reg Green, father of Nicholas Green who tragically died in a car accident in Italy and donated 7 organs and gave a second chance on life to 7 children around that region.

“He was a Champion for things that matter”- Harold Albrecht former Member Of Parliament

“I never met a man with so much determination. The work he did changed and saved so many lives across this country and around the world.” Ted Woloshyn CFRB Radio Broadcaster
