MAUREIRA, Daniel Avila - As many of you know, our beloved Weichafe, Daniel Avila passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, July 30, 2021 in Toronto together with us, his wife and daughter, after many months battling COVID-19 and a years-long struggle against gastric cancer.
If you knew Daniel, you know him as a tireless warrior, worker, writer, and loving compañero and father.
In both his native Wallmapu (aka Chile) and here in Canada, Daniel fought for and supported various movements for social justice throughout his life. Following the 1973 military coup, Daniel, together with his life-long partner sought refuge and later came to Winnipeg, in the late 1970’s, and eventually to Toronto.
He and his wife settled in the city where they raised a family together and worked as a factory spray painter until diagnosed with gastric cancer in 2018. During this time, Daniel also took to writing on cultural philosophy that will be published posthumously.
We remember him as a wonderful, humble, kind, and principled man, always willing to lend a helping hand to us and so many others throughout his life.
Whether supporting local events or through a brushstroke in painting banners, Daniel could always be seen with a smile throughout Toronto.
