Malta MariaMALTA, Maria   - November 1, 1935 - January 3, 2022

After a year long battle with mesothelioma, our dear mother and nonna, Maria Malta (nee Castano), has been reunited with the love of her life, our late father and nonno, Vito Giuseppe (Joe) Malta.

She will be sadly missed by her sons, Greg (Anne) and Frank (Kathy), and daughter, Connie Malta-Vit (Dennis), her grandchildren, Dr. Mikaela Malta (Daniel Berniker), Brady, Daniel (Katryna), Alycia (George), in London, England, Jessica (Brandon), Christian Vit (Carina), Julia Vit, her great-grandsons, Miles and Samuel Berniker, her sisters, Nina Pirruccio and Rose Luciani (Gabriele), in Toronto, her sister, Giuseppina Iemmello and her brother, Joe Castano (Marietta) and sister-in-law, Pina Macrina (Peppino) in Calabria, Italy, and her many nieces and nephews here in Toronto, in Italy and the United States.

Our mother taught us many things but, above all, embraced us with her love while she was here with us. She was a woman deeply devoted to her faith and family. Her work ethic inspired us all.

Our family's immigration was re-routed from Switzerland, to Toronto from Calabria Italy in 1966.

She began working at McGregor Socks, where she was quickly promoted to supervisor status. In 1968, she started her career in the food preparation industry with Cara, Scarborough General Hospital and, for the past 35 years, she has been with Longo's, where she made many lifelong friends and was admired by her many customers.

Many thanks to her doctors and staff during this difficult journey, especially Doctors Anthony Lott and Madelaine Batez-Dougan at Sunnybrook, Doctors Penelope Bradbury and Bernard Cummings at Princess Margaret, CHC Team Dr. Peter Simkovitch and Nurses Ioulia (Julia), Olivia and PSW Lorraine and Nurse Jackie at Mackenzie Health Richmond Hill Palliative Care Unit.

Due to the pandemic, a private family funeral will be held at St. Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Parish in Richmond Hill, following which she will be laid to rest in Thornhill).

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre, Princess Margaret Foundation and Mackenzie Health Foundation.
