COHEN, DR. Gerald (Gerry) - Passed away peacefully at home on November 16, 2017 in his 87th year.
He leaves his heartbroken wife May, to whom he was married for more than 65 years, and for whom he was best friend, wonderful life partner, and medical colleague.
He also leaves behind his beloved sons and daughters-in-law Eric and Tracy and Russell and Lynette of San Francisco, his adored grandchildren Daniel, Robert, Matthew, Emily, Sydney, Joseph and Ethan, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joe and Phyllis Lipman of Santa Barbara.
He was predeceased by his son Stuart. Gerry was an outstanding and highly respected family physician who after 20 years in practice in Toronto changed direction to join the faculty of McMaster University Department of Family Medicine, where he excelled in education, administration and patient care. His warmth and compassion made him much adored by patients, colleagues, students and friends.
He was an excellent musician who paid his way through medical school by playing clarinet and saxophone, and was later a member of the Burlington concert band for over 25 years.
Funeral will take place at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue West, on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. Interment New Fraternal Section of Bathurst Lawn Memorial Park.
Visits from family and friends would be appreciated at 11 William Carson Cres, Suite 205. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the many physicians and health professionals at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for such dedicated and excellent care over an extended time.
We also want to thank and acknowledge Gerry's personal caregiver Cecile Malones, who has been truly supportive these past few years.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Sunnybrook Foundation or to the May and Gerald Cohen Endowment for Yiddish at the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto.
