BYERS, William James - August 18, 1925 - April 24, 2018
Passed away peacefully in the Veterans K-Wing of Sunnybrook Hospital in his 93rd year.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, Cassie.
Loving father to Patricia, Janet (Colin), Greg (Bonnie), and William James, III; grandfather to Ryan, Jennifer, Kolby, Ian, Liisa, Colin Jr. and Brittny; and great-grandfather to Andrew.
He retired from Canada Post in 1990.
Bill was born in Toronto to William and Beatrice.
Two brothers predeceased him: Vernon and David; his sister, Norma, survives him. During his overseas service in the Second World War from 1943 to 1945, he saw action as a gunner and officer in Squadron 420 (aka "Snowy Owl") of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The squadron received service medals that recognized, among other feats, flying more missions than were required.
This experience sparked in Bill a life-long interest in travel to Europe, the Caribbean and the United States, especially during his retirement. Bill was an avid reader of military history and visited sites from the 20th century's two world wars and the American Civil War.
An interment of his ashes will take place at Pine Hills Cemetery at 11 a.m. May 26, 2018.
