ZEKAS, Anele - Passed away peacefully on June 17, 2018, three days shy of her 98th birthday.
But there was nothing shy about her; she had an inherent impishness.
She was the Lithuanian Energizer bunny, hauling drywall with her best friend Ida well into her mid '80s, before she was felled by a stroke. "Nellie" suffered no one.
She would insist on shoveling snow herself -- despite a selection of able-bodied men in house - because everyone but her did it wrong. Woe be the unwary who volunteered to shovel for her.
She would chase them away. "Get serious" was her stock rebuke.
She was an avid gardener, expert angler and vocal advocate of good nutrition. Don't get her started on the perils of hydrogenated oils.
Prevention magazine was her bible. On occasion she would even clash with Dr. Oz.
An unrepentant practical joker, she has been known to painstakingly peel a piece of tart rhubarb and pass it off as a garnish of celery on your plate of scrambled eggs. She arguably made the penultimate borscht and cabbage rolls. She is missed horribly by her son Ray (Violeta), daughter Rita (Rob), grandsons Raymond and Ronnie, great-granddaughter Isabelle, nephew John (Diane) and niece Aldona.
There will be a service Friday, June 22nd at 11 a.m. at Turner & Porter, 4933 Dundas St. West.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Labdara Lithuanian Nursing Home.
