Yoneda MasaYONEDA, Masa - On November 10, 2018 at the age of 97 years, Masa Yoneda passed away peacefully at the Edmonton General Hospital Palliative Care Unit.

Predeceased by her husband, Dr. Taro Yoneda in 2000 and her beloved son Ross in 2009, she leaves her children Bruce, Janet (Keir), Garth (Joanna) and Faye, and Ross' wife Navy.

Masa's 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren will also miss her dearly.

Masa was the last second-generation Takahashi family member. Masa was an exceptional mother to 5 children, born very close in age, in times of hardship.

She was attentive to each, supporting school and extracurricular activities.

Masa was born on August 14, 1921 in Victoria, BC, to Kosaburo and Toyo Takahashi. She loved the library next door and the family's beautiful garden. During WWII, her family was evacuated to Hastings Park in Vancouver. From there, they travelled to Toronto, to start again and were the first 'nuclear family' of Japanese Canadians in Toronto.

Masa worked as a secretary for the United Church, taught Sunday School and was a copywriter at a small publishing house. In 1947, she married Yoshitaro Yoneda. They moved to Alberta, initially to Vegreville, then to Edmonton. She was a consistent donor to the Red Cross, University of Alberta, the Canadian Cancer Society and many others.

The family plans private memorial gatherings; there will be no public funeral service.
