Hagino BarbaraHAGINO, Barbara Kanaye  -  It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Barbara Kanaye Hagino, on April 1, 2024, at the age of 96.

She will be remembered by her children, Michael (Carol), Sherry (Wayne); and her step- grandson, Graeme Schnarr (Tabitha and their 2 sons, Austin and Archie). She is survived by her sister, Jane Uyesugi of Vancouver.

Barbara was born in Duncan, BC, and grew up with her mother, Kayo; father, Senzo; and her 7 brothers and sisters.

During the war, she and her family were interned with many other Japanese Canadians in Tashme, southeast of Hope, BC, where she and her family lived for 4 years. After the war, her family moved east, where she met her husband, Minoru David Hagino. He had seen a picture of Barbara at a friend's house and asked to meet her.

They married at the Holy Trinity Church in downtown Toronto, and eventually settled in Scarborough. They raised 2 children, and she helped run their dry cleaning business as the presser, bookkeeper and seamstress. After selling the business, she took up golfing to spend more time with her husband, and participated in numerous pottery and art classes.

During their retirement, they were able to travel the world and visit their various family members in British Columbia, Chicago and Hawaii.

She will be laid to rest with her husband, Minoru, in the family plot at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Japanese Cultural Centre and St. Joseph's Hospital.
