Gonslaves Charles

GONSALVES, Charles G.  -  It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Charles G. Gonsalves on November 18, 2018 at the age of 84.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Jeanne; his children Brenda, Craig (Louise), Jane, Christine (Guillermo), and Patrick (Adrienne); his grandchildren Russell, Veronica, Patrick, Emily, Paloma, Matias, Adira, Heidi, and Mirabel; and his half-siblings Raymond, Donald, and Luva.

He was preceded in death by his dear sister, Barbara, and his first wife, Wendy.

Charles was born on July 6, 1934 in Paramaribo, Suriname (Dutch Guyana), and lived in Curaçao for most of his childhood before coming to Canada in 1947. He attended Upper Canada College before pursuing his medical degree at the University of Toronto. He fondly remembered his years in family practice in Alberta before specializing in neuroradiology at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. He continued in private practice for the remainder of his career.

Charles was very active throughout his life: in his youth he played cricket, football, and boxed, while later in life he enjoyed daily walks. He was an avid reader of history and had an exceptional memory and intellect. He took great pleasure from classical music, and delighted in good food and good wine. Charles had a calm and steady manner, and was generous, supportive, and very proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s varied activities and achievements.

The family extends its deepest thanks to the staff at Valleyview Residence for their compassionate care over his last 19 months.

Cremation has occurred and a celebration of Charles’s life will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Canada Brain Research Fund (https://braincanada.ca).
