PREMRU, Martin - (December 19, 1970 – September 26, 2021) - Martin passed away peacefully at home at the age of 50, with his loving wife firmly by his side as she has been throughout an extraordinary 8-month battle with glioblastoma.
He was a deeply loved husband, father, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend to many.
Born and raised in Etobicoke, Ontario in the same year as his partner in crime and brother Matt, their penchant for playful misadventure would have them soon find company in a large group of other equally well-intentioned accomplices that they would share as lifelong friends and classmates.
Upon graduating from Lakehead University with a degree in Civil Engineering, he started an illustrious career with Tractel Ltd., which lasted over 20 years.
Never short on energy or ingenuity, he made many friends along the way and inspired loyalty among all those who worked alongside him. He was a humble, caring, and thoughtful individual, who would do anything for anyone. His easy-going nature and friendly smile, put all who met him at ease.
Martin was an adventurer, who loved to travel and explore all the world had to offer. Besides dangling over New York's tallest buildings testing his safety equipment, there were bike tours through Cuba with friends, canoeing Canada's north and kayaking New Zealand, hiking in Brazil, exploring Asia, Africa, Europe, all of the Americas and regular trips to enjoy the beaches of Bermuda with his wife. He was an avid car lover, a passion shared with his best friend Eddie – with many vintage cars bought and refurbished over the years. The troubles of the day would quickly dissipate through his love of music with a tune on the radio, and he even became quite the songbird once his duet partner was found.
Martin cherished the times spent with his nephews Noah and Justin and niece Juliet as they grew up. He was the quintessential “fun” uncle and an important source of inspiration for his many achievements. He was a loyal friend to sister-in-law Sonia – the sister he never had.
Martin met his wife Shelley later in life (married 2016), but they made up for lost time exploring the world together. Their beloved daughter Ava arrived in 2018 and was her daddy’s whole heart. Even in darkness, her voice or presence would bring a smile to his face and in the end when almost all other faculties faltered, his instinct to watch over and protect her never failed.
Martin leaves behind wife Shelley and young daughter Ava, his mother Bernarda and stepfather Alois Kuhelj, his brother Matt and wife Sonia, mother in law Brenda , brother in law Barclay (Dawn), Sara (Ian), Jamie (Josh), Mike (Sue), Chris (Lindsay) and his many nieces and nephews (Noah, Juliet, Justin, Abi, Sam, Lucy, Wyatt, Chloe, Charlie, Ben, Jaden, Georgia, Emma, Connor and Ethan) that will truly miss their giant (in stature and heart) uncle.
With gratitude, there is a deep admiration to Martin’s Personal Support Worker Mo for his commitment to Martin and our family. He was Martin’s chess partner and friend over the last 8 months, as well as Theresa who showed true kindness to our family, through her nighttime care. Appreciation is also extended to the palliative care team of Dr Wales, Dr Morey and nurse Beth for their care and support of Martin over these last few months. It takes a special kind of person to support a family and patient in their care through the darkest time in their life, and they all did so with grace.
