van ZEGGEREN, Fred "Fritz" - Died peacefully, predeceased by his wife of 59 years (Zygfryda).
Much missed by his daughter Alex (Oliver), his son Mark (Miki) and grand children Caleb and Jordan.
Fred was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
He studied chemistry at the university there, and received a PhD.
He was then awarded a post doctoral fellowship at the National Research Council in Ottawa.
Based on the research he did with Dr. G. C. Benson he wrote a publication “Surface Energies of Alkali Halides”.
When back in Amsterdam he defended this in a very formal ceremony at Amsterdam University.
As a result he was awarded a higher doctoral degree in mathematics and physics.
While in Ottawa, Fred received an offer of employment at C.I.L’s Research Laboratory in McMasterville P.Q. Amongst others, he wrote a book there, with co-author mathematician Dr. S. H. Storey entitled “The Computation of Chemical Equilibria”, published by Cambridge University Press (CUP).
Recently, CUP reissued it in soft cover as a “classic”. Fred’s C.I.L. career included a 3 year stint as Worldwide R&D Coordinator with mother company I.C.I. in London England.
While there he travelled so much that his colleagues dubbed him “The Flying Dutchman”. Returning to C.I.L., Fred moved up the corporate ladder to become Vice President in 1983 until his retirement in 1990.
