Chambers DavidCHAMBERS, David George  –

March 22, 1938 - January 12, 2024

On January 12th 2024, shortly after midday, David George Chambers died peacefully at home as was his wish, with family at his bedside.

David and his twin brother Michael were born in Lincolnshire, England on March 22nd 1938, to parents Mabel and Robert Chambers.

David is predeceased by his sister Pauline and brother William.

David left school at the age of 14 and, for a time worked on the railways. As a teenager he was enlisted in the RAF as part of the mandatory National Service.

Had it not been for his time in the service, posted to Calshot, England, he may have never met his life-time partner and wife, Violet Dyer.

Married in 1958, the two celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past October. They resided for a time in in Blackfield, England, where they were blessed with 3 children, Trevor (Glenda), Elizabeth (Duncan) and Susan.

In 1982, David and Violet made the decision to head to Canada in pursuit of greater opportunities, along with Elizabeth and Susan.

David had several jobs working out of Toronto, his last full-time job was working for Young and Rubicam, where he was an office manager, working part-time hours even after reaching the age of retirement.

One of Davids greatest joys was his grandchildren, Nadine (Ollie), Kristen, Kyle (Emily), Stephanie, and Melissa (Tyler) and especially his great grandchildren, Luca, Natalia, Bearwyn and Louise.

He was always keen to hear news about them and was excited to meet Louise at just 3 days old this past July. Never a man to sit still for long, David found great purpose in being involved in his community.

In recent years he became very involved with the Whitby Historical Society, where he helped champion the move of the historic Lynde house to its new home on Brock St.

An avid stamp collector, he found great joy in collecting stamps from across the world and was a member of the local stamp club.

A man of great faith, David was involved in church life, wherever he lived. His genuine warmth and care in the expression of his faith touched the lives of many people.

Even in the last week of his life, he was planning scriptures and hymns for his funeral as he knew his time was getting short.

In 2017 after a nasty fall, he was ultimately diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease, the same disease that took his father and younger brother William. Having seen the progression, David knew he would be in for a fight.

For several years, he was able to live fairly normally, but eventually the disease would take its toll. The last 2 weeks of his life, he became fully immobile and bedridden, being cared for by his family he was able to remain at home.

David is remembered by many for his sharp wit and wacky sense of humour, he will remain in our hearts, and we are all grateful that his suffering is over.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at  W.C. TOWN FUNERAL CHAPEL (110 Dundas Street East, Whitby) from 6pm-8pm. Funeral Service will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church (209 Cochrane Street, Whitby) on Friday, February 2, 2024 at 3pm. Interment will be held at a later date.

We’ll miss you Dear, Husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great grandpa.
