CHONG, Joyce Wai Fong - (October 21, 1933 - October 3, 2018) - With great sadness, the family of Joyce Chong announces her passing at the age of 84 peacefully and surrounded by her family.
She was a loving and supportive mother to Ken (Ingrid), Steven (Susana), Kathleen (Peter) and Rex (Noreen). Adored grandmother to Ryan, Barry, Braden, Julia, Nicole, Jason, Melissa, Megan and Marcus.
Predeceased by her husband Harry.
Her large extended family of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends will fondly remember her generous nature, sincerity, and compassion, all the while battling Parkinson’s disease with great stamina, in her later years.
Born in 1933 and raised in her family village of Hoi Ping, China, Joyce emigrated to Toronto in 1954. With her husband Harry, they carried on a farming operation.
In 1962, they relocated to Huttonville. With hard work and determination, Harry and Joyce built a successful market gardening business. A variety of vegetables were produced to serve the Chinese community of restaurants and stores in the GTA.
After selling the family farm and retiring in 2003, Joyce filled her leisure time by learning and practicing Buddhism. Despite her own health challenges, Joyce gave generously to others. Her charitable spirit included travelling back to her ancestral home and helping fund renovations and improvements.
Visitation will be held at Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mt Pleasant Road, Toronto on Wednesday October 10, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The family will receive guests on Thursday October 11, 2018 at 10:00 am. Service begins at 11:00 am in the chapel. Interment will take place after the service. Reception to follow.
The family thanks Tina, Susan and Concha for the great care they have provided.
Memorial donations can be made to the North York General Foundation or Parkinson Canada.
