BARTHOS, Arthur - March 15, 1929 - November 21, 2018 - Arthur’s family is sad to announce his death at age 89 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre after a long, busy and loving life.

He will be greatly missed by Joan, his beloved wife of 69 years, and his children Gordon (Linda Cahill) and Susan, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Born in Montreal, Art was an energetic, self-made family man who started out as a factory floor sweeper in the garment trade and rose to manage three factories in different cities at the same time. For many years he was a fixture at Universal Manufacturing in the city’s east end, working six-day weeks. Always happier working than sitting still, he busied himself renovating two homes, plying his hobby as a photographer, and strolling for miles on Florida beaches in his later years while health permitted.

He was an active parishioner and warden at St. Brendan’s Church in Rosemount and a volunteer driver for elderly shut-ins, before moving to Toronto a few years ago.

A good provider, some of his happiest days were spent with his young family cottaging in Saint Gabriel de Brandon. He lived to see his children make successful careers in journalism and business, and his grandchildren in management, medicine and the law.

While proud of his family, Art’s first love was always Joan Rochford, the girl he married in 1949. The two were inseparable, and only grew closer over the years. Art will be greatly missed by granddaughters Althea Barthos Burrell (Craig) and Alexandra Barthos, by grandson Michael Oszlak (Alli Yeaton) by great-grandchildren Iona, Michael, Joseph and Evangeline Burrell, and by friends and relatives.

Visitation at Heritage Funeral Centre, Toronto at noon on Saturday, November 24, with Christian Liturgy of the Word prayer service at 2 p.m. and reception immediately to follow.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, or to the charity of your choice.
