Shipmaker DorothySHIPMAKER, Dorothy (nee Bubbert)  -  Was born on May 9, 1926 in Oolgensplaat, the Netherlands. She grew up in Holland and lived through the German occupation of Holland during the Second World War. We understand that her family took in a number of allied soldiers during the war and operations to liberate Holland. Dorothy came from a large family of eight children.

After the war, Dorothy met and eventually married her husband Pieter Shipmaker.

In 1953 or 1954 Dorothy and Pieter decided to move either to Canada or Australia as did a number of Dutch people. They eventually ended up in Perth, Western Australia. After about ten years Dorothy and Pieter adopted a son, Cliff, then a daughter, Sally, and lastly another son, Chris. While Pieter worked as an engineer, Dorothy stayed at home and looked after the children.

In 1974 in order to build the nuclear power plants in Ontario, families were recruited from all over the world. Dorothy’s family being one of those. Dorothy has called Canada home ever since. Dorothy and Pieter eventually retired and moved up north close to Tobermory where they lived in the country until Pieter passed away in 2004.

Dorothy then moved back to Toronto and lived out the rest of her life there. Five years ago, Dorothy, became a resident at Carefree Lodge. She enjoyed her many friends and the wonderful staff at the facility. It seemed that everyone knew Dorothy and she became an unofficial ambassador for Carefree Lodge telling anyone who would listen about how great the home was.

Dorothy passed away quietly in her sleep on the morning of June 1st, 2019. Survived by her children, Sally, Christopher , Cliff (Victoria), grand daughters Jessica and Sarah, grand son Christopher and in Canada pre deceased by her grand daughter Candace and grand son Justin. Dorothy also kept in touch with her sisters Martha and Eineke in Holland.

Dorothy enjoyed watching the traffic going by her window which overlooks Finch Ave. E. in Toronto as well as watching the birds and wildlife around Carefree Lodge. Dorothy enjoyed going on outings with the residents of Carefree Lodge and especially enjoyed their occasional trips to Mandarin for the buffet.

Private cremation has taken place.
