HINDY, Shirley Grace (nee Walker) - On June 1, 2019, Shirley Grace Hindy (née Walker) passed away after a short illness at the age of 87 in Scarborough, Ontario.
Born in Toronto on September 29, 1932, Shirley was a life-long soldier in the Salvation Army, attending Toronto 1 Corps, Lisgar Street Corps, and Toronto Temple where she met and married “her Doug” before calling Scarborough Citadel Corps her long-term church home on the first Sunday in June 1959.
Throughout her life, in her own quiet way, Shirley constantly showed the convictions of her deep faith and her belief in the notion of “heart to God and hand to man.” Moving from Toronto’s west end in 1954 to a brand-new house on the edge of the city in Scarborough, she taught Sunday School, sang in the Songsters, and helped organize and execute many Corps activities including the 25th Corps Anniversary, and the ongoing “Take-a-Break” series for the ladies of the Corps. She was instrumental in the annual Corps-level Red Shield Appeal, coordinating the delivery of materials and collection of donations. As office secretary during Scarborough Corps’ rebuilding campaign, she helped keep the vital operations running apace until the Corps returned to their current facilities.
Even “retirement” couldn’t stop her from serving her community and those in need of spiritual nourishment. She poured her creativity into the Women’s Coffee Break ministry, helping organize the monthly program, as well as constructing the table and room decorations each month.
Shirley stands as an example of quiet determination, faith, and of devotion to the mission of service to those who need service most.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Percy and Gladys, and her sister Lillian. She is survived by her sister Doreen, her loving and beloved husband Bramwell Douglas (“Doug”), and is dearly missed by her son Christopher and his wife Dana. Shirley was sister to Bill, aunt to Bonnie, Randy, Tara, Kevin, Kathy and Kenny.
Visitation at Jerrett funeral home, 660 Kennedy Road, Scarborough on June 5th from 2 - 4pm and 6 - 8pm.
Visitation will resume at Scarborough Citadel Community Church, 2021 Lawrence Ave. E., Scarborough on June 6th from 1:00 p.m. until time of funeral service there at 2:00 p.m.
