McAlpine LloydMCALPINE, Lloyd Rayburn - After living an incredibly full life, Lloyd passed away peacefully on Friday, July 10, 2020 at the ripe young age of 101.

Devoted husband to his late wife Jean (2008), Lloyd will be greatly missed by his children; Joan (Gary), Trish (Brian) and Bob (Brenda), grandchildren; Stacey, Shawn (Shawnalee), Amanda, Heather, Alex, Bradley and Ashley, and great grandchildren; Zane, Evan and Matt.

Lloyd was incredibly proud of his family and often commented how lucky we were to have each other and to have enjoyed so much time together including Sunday dinners, our family cruise and other trips, times at the family cottages, Goderich visits, golf club pasta nights, and most recently his 100th birthday celebration.

Lloyd loved to talk and spent hours telling stories of his life. In his nineties, he began to write his memoirs which he and Trish continued to work on until his passing.

Son of Peter and Mae McAlpine, born March 25, 1919, he grew up in Windsor (Walkerville). He excelled in school, partly due to his incredible memory. He won numerous awards and scholarships which allowed him to attend the University of Toronto.

Lloyd and his only brother Earl both joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII. Lloyd was selected as a navigator after receiving a perfect score on the navigation exam. He spent the bulk of his time in the war teaching navigation and in his spare time managed the bar and music in the Officers Mess. Sadly, his brother Earl was shot down the day after being reunited with Lloyd on an Easter visit in England.

After the war, Lloyd continued his career at Price Waterhouse as an auditor and then went on to Imperial Oil where he worked for over 35 years. There his career began in audit and accounting, and later he was instrumental in the adoption of computer technology within Imperial Oil. He became one of North America’s leading COBOL programmers and travelled across North America and in Asia teaching programming and advancing the use of computers within Exxon. On any given weekend, Lloyd could be seen in his living room or poolside seated beside a stack of computer printouts poring over thousands of lines of computer code to find opportunities to streamline a program and save Exxon expensive computer time. With similar skills, Lloyd managed his own investment portfolio using charts, graphs and self-written computer programs until very recently.

Outside of work, Lloyd believed in enjoying life. He loved to eat out, enjoyed a good white rum and Sprite, was an excellent bridge and card player. He loved to travel and took many cruises and holidays with Jean, friends and family. He was an avid golfer and spent many happy years as a member at Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club, playing until he was 93.

Our deepest thanks go out to the staff and residents at Amica Swan Lake and the caregivers from Nurse Next Door for their loving care and support and for enriching Lloyd’s life in his time at Amica.

A family celebration will be held at a later date.

We ask that people remember the special times they enjoyed with Lloyd and, if so inclined donate to a Veterans Association, Alzheimer’s Society or charity of your choice.
