Zunino JorgeZUNINO, Jorge Humaña - Born in Concepción, Chile on the 22nd of July, 1934. Passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Arauco Housing Co-operative in Toronto on November 6th, 2020.

He was a father, grandfather, friend and mentor to many.

He lost his mother early in life and left home in his teenage years. Jorge was a general labourer at the Compañia de Acero del Pacífico (CAP) steel company in his hometown. However, this was not what he wanted in life and began to educate himself, finishing his secondary education at night and earning a scholarship to study engineering at the University of Concepción. He graduated near the top of his class. After graduation Jorge returned to CAP as an engineer.

He later moved to Rancagua with his wife Adelaida and children Paz, Alvaro, and Rodrigo, while his son Hernán stayed in Talcahuano to complete his secondary school studies. In Rancagua, Jorge worked at the El Teniente copper mine as a mechanical engineer. He was a political leader, becoming a representative of the Radical party of Chile in Rancagua. Jorge lived through the military coup in Chile in 1973, when he was arrested and jailed for three months. He came to Canada in 1974 as a political refugee and was joined by Adelaida and his three youngest children in 1975.

Jorge held many jobs in Toronto while waiting for a meaningful engineering opportunity. He practiced his vocation with zest and participated in numerous other activities. Theatre was a passion and he directed “La Pérgola de las Flores.” He was the executive producer of the movie “Dilemma." Jorge also was editor of the news magazine “Opinion."

In his drive to help the community, one of Jorge’s greatest achievements was the creation of the Arauco Housing Cooperative. He worked tirelessly to make this a reality alongside his great friend, the late Ivan Sanchez.

Devoted father and grandfather, Jorge will be remembered for putting others ahead of himself, ever available with a helping hand. He will be missed by his children Hernán (Thérèse), Paz, Alvaro (Anna) and Rodrigo (Maria Antonieta) and grandchildren Felipe, Melissa, Mauricio, Andrés, Emily, Zachary and Moira.

Arrangements with Scott funeral home, West Toronto chapel.
