Berndl Dr AlfredBERNDL, Dr. Alfred Ph.D.,   - November 18, 1926 - April 6, 2021

Alfred died peacefully at home with his wife Aleksandra at his side. He was predeceased by his first wife Barbara Rippel and his half-sister Olga.

He leaves behind his beloved second wife, Aleksandra, half sister Elfriede Brandstätter (Hasan), and his two children Walter Berndl (Leslie) and Elfi Berndl.

He is forever Opa to his five grandchildren: Marc Berndl (Jennifer Kurkoski), Anne Berndl (Murray Wilson), Elizabeth Berndl (David Calabrese), Kylie Berndl Braukman (James) and Chelsea Berndl Sherrington (Alex).

Alfred is lovingly remembered as Opa Opa to his eleven great-grandchildren; Brant, Maxwell, Liam, Lucy, Ben, Sophia, Sebastian, Ian, Nathan, Lilah and Theo.

He was also Opa to his son-in-law Nick's son Gordon Gere (Eileen) and family. He is fondly remembered by Aleksandra's children; Julie (Akin) and Greg and Greg's sons Sam and Oliver.

In Europe, he leaves his nephew Pauli Doblhofer's wife Gerti and son Harald (Denise and family). Born in Linz, an only child, he was raised by his grandparents and single mother Katharina Berndl.

After the war, he immigrated to Toronto in 1954 with his family and started his career in civil engineering at Kilborn Engineering. Encouraged and supported by Barbara, he obtained his Masters and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He subsequently was Manager of Engineering at McKee, Lurgi, ADM and Equicon, travelling to sites around the world.

After being widowed for five years, Alfred married Aleksandra Testaguzza in 2007, gaining a new second family.

His zest for life is reflected in his "My Memoirs ~ The Story of My Life ~ An Adventure" which is dedicated to "my family, past and present, who have accompanied me on my life's journey." He will be missed by family, friends and colleagues in Toronto, Kitchener, Otter Lake, California and Europe.

The family would appreciate donations to the Dorothy Ley Hospice or to Prostate Cancer Canada. Cremation has taken place and he rests at the Park Lawn Mausoleum.

A celebration of Alfred's life will be held once COVID conditions permit.
