Fitzharding PamFITZHARDINGE, Pamela Marjorie - Passed away peacefully on Friday, September 24, 2021.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Moreton, and sister, Betty.

She will be sorely missed by her niece, Lesley Woods, her Australian cousins, former colleagues and her numerous friends and neighbours.

Pam’s parents emigrated to Canada from Australia. They settled in Montreal where she was born in 1932.

She studied at McGill University, where she was one of very few women completing a medical degree. She specialized in pediatrics, followed by a fellowship in Philadelphia.

In the late ‘60’s she was part of a team doing leading edge clinical research on premature babies and high-risk births. In 1974 she came to Toronto to join the staff at Sick Kids Hospital and later Mount Sinai Hospital. She became a full professor at the University of Toronto.

She was passionate about her work and her calling. She mentored numerous interns and residents who appreciated her expertise and dedication. She was as demanding of her students as she was of herself. Her pioneering research in neonatal care has improved the lives of countless newborns over subsequent decades.

Pam’s career was cut short in the late ‘80’s by her first battle with cancer.

After a difficult recovery, Pam turned her attention and abilities to getting involved with her community and church.

We would like to thank Marlene, her caregivers (Suzara, Dixie and their colleagues) and her close friends. The special care provided allowed Pam to live her last years at home in spite of serious illness. Pamela was loved and appreciated by many. She will be deeply missed.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday September 29th at 11:00 am in Christ Church Deer Park 1570 Yonge St, Toronto.
