ANWAR, Rashid Ahmad - On Saturday, February 17, 2024, Dr. Rashid Ahmad Anwar died at Sunnybrook Hospital, in the presence of his sons, Kerim and Selim Anwar.
Dr. Anwar was born on October 15, 1930, at Nakodar, District Jullundur, Punjab, British India.
He completed his M.Sc. Biochemistry in 1952 at the University Institute of Chemistry, Panjab University, Lahore, Pakistan. From 1954-57, he did his Ph.D. in biochemistry at Michigan State University.
In December of 1960, he moved to Canada to take up a position as a Post-Doctoral Fellow with the National Research Council's Division of Applied Biology in Ottawa.
In 1963, he became a Research Associate in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto, and in 1974 he became a full professor.
He enjoyed a distinguished career until his retirement in 1996. Dr. Anwar is survived by his sons, Dr. Kerim and Mr. Selim Anwar. He will be interred next to his wife, Dr. Ayşe Özge Anwar, at Pine Ridge Memorial Gardens in Ajax, Ontario, on February 18, 2024.
There will be prayers at the Turkish Canadian Islamic Heritage Association at 336 Pape Avenue, Toronto, shortly before the burial.
