Torneiro InesTORNEIRO, Ines Martins - With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother Inês Martins Torneiro. She went to be with her Saviour Jesus Crist on the early hours of the morning of March 7, 2021 at St Joseph’s Hospital, in Toronto at the age of 95.

Inês was born on January 27, 1926 at Feteiras do Sul, São Miguel-Açores to José Martins and Maria Terceira. Growing up Inês was an active member of her community. She loved to sing, dance, play the Portuguese guitar and participate on many school and church plays.

In 1944 she married João and became the proud mother and grandmother of 14 children, 38 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren.

She was wise beyond her years. An independent woman who took pride in everything she did. In her strength, courage, determination and vision, Ines was not only the matriarch but the pillar of the Torneiro family.

Inês was predeceased by her beloved husband Joao, children Gilberta and Leonor, parents José Martins and Maria Terceira, sisters Maria José, and Cizaltina, daughter in-law Herminia, son in-laws Joaquim, Viriato and Aires, nieces Judite, Berta and nephew Armando.

Inês was the loving Mother of José Carlos Rodrigues, Sergia Carvalho,Valdemira Rodrigues, Esmeralda (João)Vicente, Rosalina Rodrigues, Libania Rodrigues, João Maria (Odete) Rodrigues, Anibal (Barbara) Rodrigues, Rui (Licia) Torneiro, Maria da Graça (Viriato) Nogueira, Leonor (Anibal) Dias, and Paula Stone and cherished grandmother of Sara Maria (Carlos) Rodrigues, Duarte Nuno (Conceicão) Rodrigues, Ana Luisa (Pedro) Marques, José Carlos (Jenne) Rodrigues, Maria Beatriz (Pedro)Batista, Edmundo (Tara) Rodrigues, Paulo Sergio (Grace) Carvalho, Carlos (Ilda) Carvalho, Miguel Carvalho, Roberto Sousa, Patricia (Gunnar) Reed, Paulo Alexandre (Lani) Vicente, Pedro (Sandra) Rodrigues, Deidra Vicente, Marco (Joana) Vicente, Bridget Ricci, Miriam Sousa, Ricardo Nuno (Amanda) Rodrigues, Laura (André) Andrade, Sergio (Anita) Rodrigues, Jessica (Adam) Boechler, Patrick (Lindsay) Rodrigues, Justine ( Alex) Cochennec, Jennifer and Jocelyn Rodrigues, Daniela, Nicole, and Emma Torneiro, Sara Margarida (Carlos) Mejia, Bruno Nogueira, Elizabeth (Gorge) Stergiou, Anibal, Jessica, Moses and Sabrina Dias, Alexandra (Diego) de Paula, Marina Ribeiro.

She was also the great grandmother of Maria and Joana Pereira, Inês, Diogo, Nuno, Matilde Rodrigues, Laura Furtado, Francisca Marques, Frederica and Joaquim Batista, Mia Carvalho, Abby, and Jack Reed, Joshua and Benjamin Sousa, Joel, Mathew, Ariana, Sidney, Eleri, David, Michael, Cristiano, Pedro João,Vicente, Alexandra Sofia, Mateo Ricci, Mila Andrade, Xavier, Levi, Rodrigues, Chloe and Braedan Boechler, Alia Cochennec, Sofia Isabel, Katarina and Carlos Mejia, Aelah Aurelia and Amaya Nogueira, Nicholas and Nathan Stergiou Sofia de Paula.

Ines will be loved, deeply missed and forever remembered by all of her family and friends and others who came to know her.

In closing, we would like to thank all those involved in our mother’s care. In particular, our thank you to Dr. Lucina Pinto, Dr. Paul Mazzota, Dr Marotta, and our wonderful home nurse Kerri Hughes. As well, sincere thanks to mother’s companions Madalena Chita, Cecilia Rodrigues and all her caring PSW’S.

Our big thank you to all the wonderful doctors and nurses at St. Joseph Hospital for their care and support during her stay. A special thank you to Dr. Habeeb.

The Torneiro family greatly appreciates your gestures of sympathy and words of condolences at this very difficult time. Due to current COVID 19 restrictions, a short visitation schedule has been arranged with Jerrett funeral home, St. Clair chapel prior to funeral service which will be private for family.

In lieu of flowers and if wished, donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation. Entombment at Prospect Cemetery.
