ALLERT, Kayla Catheriner Allert -

January 19, 1991 - April 24, 2024

"The world doesn't feel as happy anymore"  It's with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kayla Catheriner Allert, a remarkable young woman who defied the odds with her indomitable spirit and zest for life.

Kayla passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 24 at Toronto General Hospital. She was 33 years old.

Kayla joined the Smales family at the age of seven where she quickly became the heart and soul of her family.

Her infectious enthusiasm for life was evident to all who knew her and she was a testament to resilience and joy despite facing significant health challenges from a young age. Kayla will be missed dearly by her family including her mommy Frances Smales, sister Tori Kay (Steve), brother Andrew Smales (Fran Kerfoot), sister Tiffin Monk (Rob Bertschi), best friend Christine Bilsky, and the "kids" Billy, Lily, Vivian and Sebastian. Kayla is predeceased by her cherished daddy David Smales.

Despite her health issues, Kayla knew how to enjoy every minute life had to offer. She cherished her family and friends deeply and left an indelible mark on their lives as well as anyone who was lucky enough to spend time with her. Kayla's passions were as vibrant as her personality -she adored celebrating her birthday, relished all things Barney, The Lion King and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and found joy in music, dancing, Big Macs, new shoes, pens on a string, calculators ("games"), fashionable eyeglasses and jewelery, and coffee.

Her love for her family was unmatched and unwavering.

After a recent, sudden decline in Kayla's health followed by a weeklong stay in Toronto General Hospital's ICU, Kayla joined her Daddy in heaven. Kayla spent her final few days surrounded by love from all her closest people with her hospital room never empty of family and friends and while our hearts are broken, we take solace knowing that she has been reunited with her Daddy in heaven catching up on missed hugs, kisses and cuddles.

She now rests in peace, free from the physical burdens she carried so bravely in life. Kayla's memory will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. Her love and laughter will continue to resonate in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

A celebration of Kayla's life will be held by her family, Wednesday May 8th, from 12:00pm until 3:00pm at Trinity Hall in Bowmanville (formerly Trinity United Church- corner of Divison and Church Street).

Kayla's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have reached out with support and love during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Blood Services or another charity of your choice. Kayla, you will be dearly missed.

Our loss is Heaven's gain. We will love you forever.
