Lobo MafaldaLOBO, Maria Mafalda Fernandes Sousa - Our hearts are broken that our kind and courageous Mafalda Lobo passed away suddenly on August 15, 2020.

George Pinto, her loving husband, was by her side, holding her hand.

Mafalda was a gentle, loving soul who brought the warmth of the sun to all whose lives she touched.

First and foremost, her family was her priority and she was devoted and attentive to them all: George, her partner, best friend and husband of 30 years, her beautiful boys, sons Lucas and Matias, parents Carolina and Virgilio, parents-in-law Benvinda and Francisco, sister Paula (Zé), brother Pedro (Tuxa), best friend Vanda (Ron), and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins (many, many cousins!) and extended family.

Mafalda was born in Guimaraes, Portugal and came to Toronto as a youngster.

Her dedication and love for her family in Portugal drew her back there as often as she could manage, generally choosing family over the discovery of farther-flung destinations.

With warmth, generosity, loyalty and gentle strength, she enriched our lives with her love and caring. Even as she met the challenges brought on by breast cancer, she remained strong and steadfast for those around her, and drew little attention to herself. She never wanted the illness to define her nor how she lived her life.

But there is no doubt that George, Lucas and Matias were the centre of Mafalda’s life. She and George were best friends with an exceptional bond and enviable relationship. Her sons Lucas and Matias were her pride and joy. Nothing gave Mafalda more joy than time spent with them at home, on an outing or at their Schoolhouse.

She was the heart, soul and – according to many – the brains of the family.

We will all miss her kindness and loving nature, her good counsel and unwavering solidarity and support. Friends remember her welcoming smile, how she made us feel we were special and a necessary part of the whole. Most of all, we will miss her laugh – a genuine laugh that started deep in her soul and spread to all those around.

Very special thanks to Isabel for her kind and compassionate support that ushered George and Mafalda through her last days. Thanks also to the doctors and nurses at Toronto General and Toronto Western Hospitals. They provided compassion, care and support not only to Mafalda but to George and the boys.  Also thankful for her best friend Vanda for supporting the family during this time. And, finally, a thank-you to all the friends and family who have offered comfort and support and made this difficult time more bearable.

A gathering to celebrate Mafalda’s life is planned from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM on Sunday, August 30th, 2020 at Cardinal Funeral Home. Bathurst Chapel, Toronto.

Please, no flowers. We would welcome donations to Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation, and encourage you all to raise a glass to Mafalda with loved ones.
