KARAPITA, Alexander Donald   - July 31, 1929 - September 15, 2021

Alexander Donald Karapita, 92.

Cherished husband of over 60 years to Gertrude, beloved father to Stephanie (O'Neil Smith), Michael (Paul Harris) and John (Shelley Potter), and adoring grandfather to Sophia, Ksenia, Joshua and Claudia.

Alex also leaves his sisters, Mary Wenc and Pearl Wuschenny, many nieces, nephews and extended family across Canada.

A man devoted to family and faith, science and math, health care and innovation, Alex was born in Jedburgh, Saskatchewan, to a large Ukrainian family who had come to Canada for a new life in a new land.

He was educated first in Yorkton and then in Montreal at Sir George Williams (Concordia) University and the University of Toronto.

Alex blazed a trail in hospital management in Newfoundland, the Ontario Ministry of Health, as Executive Director of Women's College Hospital, and in private enterprise.

He singularly revolutionized bedside care across Canada with his groundbreaking invention of the hanging I-V pole, the first of many ingenious approaches to patient care.

The family will hold a private Ukrainian Catholic funeral and burial, and invites anyone wishing to do so, to make a donation to the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies at the University of Toronto and/or the renovation fund at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Toronto.
