Lozinski MariaLOZINSKI, Maria (nee PERIJ)   -

November 22, 1925 - April 4, 2024

Peacefully, on April 4, 2024, Maria (nee Perij) Lozinski passed away at Ivan Franko Home.

The youngest of four children, she was born in 1925 to Timofij and Efrosinia (Farion) Perij in the village of Ridkiw, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine.

She leaves in deep sorrow her daughters, Helen and Lilia; family in Ukraine; as well as many friends.

Maria was predeceased by her beloved husband of 45 years, Wasyl Lozinski.

Maria remembered the joys of her early childhood with great fondness, especially the influence of a young village teacher who inspired a love of Ukrainian culture in his students.

Tragically, this happy time was darkened by a series of foreign occupations. With the Nazi occupation of Volyn, at sixteen, Maria volunteered to replace her older brother as an Osterbeiter (slave labourer) and was deported by cattle-car to toil on German farms.

After the Allied liberation of Europe, Maria found refuge in a "displaced persons" camp in the British zone and immigrated to England after the war.

In Manchester, she met and married the handsome Wasyl Lozinski and together the couple moved to Canada to build a new life and raise a family.

The hardships that Maria experienced in her youth left their mark on her memory but not on her. Loving and optimistic, she was always ready to entertain friends with a beautiful singing voice and delicious Ukrainian cooking.

Always concerned about the welfare of her community, Maria actively participated in volunteer work at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church, where she served as an assistant head of the "sisterhood."

Maria was selfless in her devotion to family and community and will remain forever a source of strength and inspiration.

Friends may attend a Visitation at the Cardinal Funeral Home, 92 Annette Street, Toronto, on April 10, 2024, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. A Panakhyda (memorial service) will be held on April 10th, at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on April 11th, at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1630 Dupont St., Toronto, followed by the Burial in Oakville.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Canada Ukraine Foundation in support of the war effort in Ukraine or to the Ivan Franko Home..
