Kavanagh Dr RobertKAVANAGH, Dr. Robert John Kavanagh  -  Passed away at age 91 at the Elizabeth Bruyère Hospital in Ottawa on June 3, 2023.

 

Bob Kavanagh was born in Hampshire, England and immigrated to Canada to attend the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton as an Electrical Engineering student.

 

After graduating in 1953, he completed Masters and PhD degrees at the University of Toronto and post-doctoral studies at Imperial College, London.

 

He taught at the University of Toronto and then, returning to New Brunswick, taught Electrical Engineering at UNB.

 

He later served as Dean of Graduate Studies and Acting Vice-President, Academic.

 

In the mid-1980s, he moved to Ottawa to work for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. Throughout his career, he served on numerous university, national and international committees, as well as in several advisory roles. Dear father of Judy (Don Haines) and Steve (Randa Sabbagh); and partner to Rhoda Waldon.

 

Predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Millicent (née McRae), whom he met on an ocean liner crossing the Atlantic.

 

As was Bob's wish, no funeral will be held. However, a gathering to celebrate his life may be held later this year.

 

The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at the Ottawa Civic and Elizabeth Bruyère Hospitals for their palliative care.
