Liakos MagdaliniLIAKOS, Magdalini - Magdalini Liakos passed away early morning, January 23, 2021 at the age of 78, after several battles with ongoing heart problems, which were complicated further by the Covid-19 virus she contracted while in hospital.

Magdalini was the second of four children born to Christos and Christina Meskos.

She immigrated to Canada shortly after her husband, Simeon Liakos, in 1966, bringing with her their two daughters, Eleni and Melpomeni. In 1968 Magdalini and Simeon welcomed their son Steve.

She worked in several factories over the years, each time learning more and improving both her English and her sewing skills. She worked at John Leckie sewing tents for many years until the company closure.  Her sewing skills were exceptional and she soon found new work at Quality Quilting and worked there for over 15 years. She became one of only three people in all of Canada who was skilled in “outline quilting.”  Designers for high-end homes and yachts sought out her services and when the owner of Quality Quilting retired, Magdalini and her husband Simeon purchased the equipment and started their own sewing factory. Many of these high-end designers followed her to her new business and she enjoyed a successful career as a seamstress of high-end designer products.

Magdalini and Simeon were an exceptional team. They had a way of communicating which at times required no words.  If he needed a hammer, she was handing it to him before he asked.  If she needed a bolt of fabric, he was already loading it on the machine for her.

She lost her beloved husband, and best friend, Simeon, in March of 2000, but found the strength to carry on through her devout faith in God and in the love of her three children.

She leaves behind her daughter Eleni Markoulis, her daughter Melpomeni (Mary-Ann) Liakos, her son Steve and his wife Vikki Liakos, and her two precious grandchildren, Tyler and Myranda. She also leaves behind her sister Vicki (Paul) Gatzopulos, her sister-in-law Patty (Evangelos) Meskos, her sister-in-law Frieda (John) Meskos, her beloved aunt and uncle, Pareskevi and Ilias Fekos, (cousins Olga, Arete and Jim), as well as many adoring nieces and nephews.

Magdalini also leaves behind her sister-in-law Mary (Nick) Retzos, her sister-in-law Dorothy (Chris) Liakos, her brother-in-law Bill Liakos, her brother-in-law Kosta Liakos and his wife, Athina, her brother-in-law Tom Liakos and his wife Gena and her brother-in-law Peter (Voula) Liakos.  She also leaves her sister-in-law Annoula Kouthraki (Don McKay) and many much-loved nieces and nephews.

She also leaves behind her dear friends and Koumbari, Alex and Valia Sourdos and their family, as well as many cousins with whom she was also very close.

One of the highlights of Magdalini’s life was her trip to Australia where she spent three wonderful months catching up with old friends and family.  She will be missed by the Giantsis family, the Grosdanis families, the Tirpkos family, Vrantsis families and the Ouliaris families.  She reminisced about her trip often and kept in touch with all her family in Australia and in Greece. She will also be sadly missed by her dear friends, Katina Mentis, Effie Pappas and Zoie Themelis.

Magdalini cherished her family and treasured her friends and she was never happier than when in their company.  Her home and her arms were always open.

In her last few days, many times she told her children, “Your dad is waiting for me” and she was at peace with her approaching death.  She reached out to many of her treasured family and friends to tell them all how much she loved them and to tell them she was “going home.”

Magdalini will be laid to rest at Pine Hills Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Simeon, on Monday February 1st.  Sam and Magda, sweethearts and best friends, will be reunited for all time.

Private Family Arrangements entrusted with Ogden funeral home, Scarborough.
