SMIT, Klaas   -

April 5, 1934 - April 7, 2024

 

After a short battle with cancer, Klaas passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on April 7, 2024, at the age of 90.

Beloved husband of Irene (nee Sloot); loving father to Tina (Mark) and Renee (Grant). Proud Opa to Elizabeth, Robert, Emma and Brandon.

 

Klaas was born April 5, 1934 In Torum a family farm in Holland in the Westpolder in the Netherlands. Klaas and his family immigrated to Canada in July 1949.

 

After a few years they settled in Walkerton, Ontario. Klaas and Irene were married on May 29, 1965 and eventually settled in Malton, ON to raise their girls.

 

Opa loved his grandchildren dearly and enjoyed watching them do all their different sports and activities.

 

Klaas was an avid gardener and loved hockey.

 

Visitation will be held at Scott Funeral Home – West Toronto Chapel (1273 Weston Road, Toronto, ON) on Monday, April 15, 2024 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.  A Chapel service will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at 11 a.m.

 

Klaas will be put to rest at Douglas Hill Cemetery in Cargill, Ontario on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
