STYRAN, Patricia Caroline, RN, M.ScN.,  September 15, 1928 - April 30, 2018

Styran PatriciaIt is with sadness that we announce the passing of 'Aunt Pat,' whose humour, intelligence and inspirational nature will be missed by all who knew her, including nephews Mark, Shawn and D'Arcy Kennedy, Kelly and Tracy Smith, nieces Erin Smith, Dana Gentili and Tracy Brown and good friends Patricia Irwin, Lily Majak, Anne Noble and Dr. Ken Gamble.

Pat was the daughter of Walter Herbert Styran and Janet Kincaid (McPhee) Styran of Ottawa; she was predeceased in 2017 by her sisters Betty Kennedy Burton and Joan Smith. Pat attended Ottawa's Calvary Baptist Church and graduated from London Bible School in 1951.

In the 1950s and 1960s she served with the Sudan Interior Mission in Africa, initially in Jos, Nigeria and later in Niger, Benin and Liberia. She won the Academic Award for Medical Nursing at Ottawa Civic Hospital's School of Nursing in 1961. While in Africa she survived both cancer and Dengue fever, but ill-health eventually limited her overseas mission work.

Though slowed by two strokes which affected her speech, Pat remained cheerful, marvelling at how "the Lord has always provided for me." She continued to support SIM until the end of her life and gladly looked forward to "being with the Lord." Thanks to Rebecca Millican and Leonie Ozemoya, who provided such wonderful companionship to Pat in her final years and to the staff at Shepherd Terrace Retirement Residences for all they have done for Pat.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 10th, at 12:20 p.m. in the Shepherd Village Chapel, 3760 Sheppard Avenue East, Toronto, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, any donation to SIM would be appreciated.
