Longley SybilLONGLEY, Sybil L. (nee COOK) -  Sybil Longley, born in Edmonton, Alberta, but a longtime resident of Toronto, Ontario, passed away at home, on June 1, 2023, at the age of 80, after a courageous battle with ALS.

Sybil is survived by her loving husband, Wilfred; her children, Gayle and Neil (Karen); her grandchildren, Morgan and Hannah; her siblings, Ellinor and Lilian (Edward); and sister-in-law, Yvette.

Previously departed loved ones include her brothers, Roland and Edwin (Patricia); her brother-in-law, Ernie; and son-in-law, Gary.

Sybil will be fondly remembered for her unwavering commitment to serving others, her infectious laugh and her genuine kindness. She touched the lives of many, and left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

After moving to Toronto in 1967, Sybil established deep roots in the community through her marriage to Wilf and her remarkable career as the Executive Director of the Red Door Family Shelter, where she dedicated over 20 years of her life.

What began as a temporary shelter in the basement of WoodGreen United Church for refugees grew into a multi-faceted organization that served newcomers, abused women and those experiencing homelessness.

The Red Door expanded to three locations across Toronto, a testament to both the overwhelming need and Sybil's unwavering dedication to helping others.

In honor of Sybil's memory, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Red Door Family Shelter or the Sunnybrook Foundation – ALS Clinic.

A celebration of Sybil's life will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at McDougall & Brown Funeral Home, 2900 Kingston Rd., Scarborough.  Family and friends are invited to drop in anytime between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m.

"Oh my golly," Sybil will be greatly missed, but her light will continue to shine brightly in all our hearts.
